The story

History: facts, each with its source

The UZ V8 family began with the 1UZ-FE in the 1989 Lexus LS 400. The 4.7L 2UZ-FE was given a cast-iron block for durability, since it was meant to rev low and pull hard in pickups and SUVs. Wikipedia lists it in the Land Cruiser from 1998, the Tundra from 1999, the Sequoia from 2000 and the 4Runner from 2002, and says the UR V8s replaced it from 2010.1

Jalopnik writes that the engine earned a reputation for being indestructible, and that the 4th gen 4Runner is the only generation to offer a V8.2
