The story

History: facts, each with its source

The 2.7L 1AR-FE arrived in late 2008 in the Venza and the Highlander. The 2.5L 2AR-FE came to the US RAV4 in 2008 and replaced the 2AZ-FE in the Camry in 2009. The A25A later replaced the AR.1

The 2AR-FXE is an Atkinson-cycle version for hybrids, including the RAV4 Hybrid, which trades power for efficiency and leans on the electric motor for peak demands.1

  • Block: Aluminium, open deck, with cast-in iron liners1
  • Valvetrain: Twin overhead cams driven by a chain, timing varied on both cams1
