The story

History: facts, each with its source

Toyota began developing the F engine in December 1948 as it looked to export vehicles, and first fitted it in November 1949. Wikipedia says its block and bottom end were loosely based on a GMC six, its head on the Chevrolet Stovebolt six, and that it gained fame as the Land Cruiser engine.1

The 4.2L 2F followed in 1975, and the 4.0L 3F in 1985, reaching the US in 1988 with fuel injection.1

  • Valvetrain: Pushrods, with a gear-driven camshaft1
  • Block and head: Cast iron1
