History: facts, each with its source

The A family began with the 1A in 1978. Wikipedia lists the 1.6L twin-cam 4A-GE in the first MR2 and the Corolla GT-S, the supercharged 4A-GZE in the MR2 to 1989, and the economy 4A-FE and 1.8L 7A-FE in Corollas and base Celicas.1

Wikipedia says the 4A-GE's reliability and performance earned it a fan base, that new performance parts are still sold, and that the 4A-GE and 4A-GZE are popular in racing for their durability and low cost.1

  • Block and head: Cast-iron block, aluminium head1
  • Valvetrain: Twin overhead cams driven by a belt, four valves per cylinder1
