What to check: Listen for a rattle from the rear of the engine.

Wikipedia says the N47 is prone to excessive timing chain wear and early failure, that a rattle from the rear of the engine is the sign, and that failure can mean a new engine. Engines built from March 2007 to January 2009 were worst, but failures were reported in BMW diesels made until 2015.
