  • V6 head gasket failure All years One source so far

What to check: Ask for proof the head gaskets were replaced, and look for coolant loss, overheating or oil mixed with coolant.

Toyota extended head gasket cover on V6s built to early 1990, then replaced the gaskets on V6s built from late 1990 to early 1995, whether or not they leaked. That campaign expired in 2018.

  • Worn clutch All years

What to check: On a test drive, feel for a clutch that slips or bites high, and ask when it was last replaced.

Two Edmunds owner reviews mention clutches. An owner of a 1993 four replaced theirs twice in 170,000 miles, and an owner of a 1990 says theirs already needed a new one.
