Rusted rear frame rails All years Walk away if found
What to check: Drop the spare tire and look at the rear frame rails.
Corsetti Cruisers calls this the most important check and frame rust the costliest repair. Three members of one IH8MUD thread name frame rust, one of them by the spare tire, and one says to walk away from a rusty frame.

Rust at the windshield, roof and wheel wells All years
What to check: Look at the windshield gasket corners, the roof drip rails, the tailgate hinges, the inner wheel wells behind the cargo covers, the front fenders by the lower trim and the rear fenders behind the mud flaps. Use a magnet to find filler.
The shop says every 60 starts to rust at the rear wheel well, that rust under the windshield gasket is very hard to fix, and that rust which has reached the roof beams means keep looking. Two members of one IH8MUD thread add the bottom of the tailgate, and one says to check the rockers and rear quarters for filler with a magnet.

Missing smog equipment All years
What to check: Confirm the emissions equipment is all there and connected.
Missing parts can be expensive to put back, and the carburetor often needs a rebuild. Two members of one IH8MUD thread say the same: one calls the smog equipment the biggest issue on a 60, and the other expects a carburetor rebuild and emissions work.
