The story

History: facts, each with its source

Wikipedia says VVT-i stands for Variable Valve Timing with intelligence. It came in 1995 on the 2JZ-GE in the Toyota Crown, and uses engine oil pressure on an actuator to turn the intake camshaft against its drive.1

Wikipedia says Dual VVT-i times both the intake and exhaust camshafts, first on the 3S-GE in 1998. VVTL-i also changes how far and how long the valves open, first on the 2ZZ-GE in the 1999 Celica. VVT-iE moves the intake camshaft with an electric motor.1
