The story

History: facts, each with its source

Wikipedia says a T-top is a roof with a removable panel on each side of a rigid bar. Gordon Buehrig patented it in 1951, after first using it on a 1948 prototype, and the 1968 Chevrolet Corvette coupe was the first car built in the US to have one.1
