The story

History: facts, each with its source

Wikipedia says xDrive is the marketing name for the all-wheel drive on various BMW models since 2003, when the first xDrive models replaced the earlier all-wheel drive system.1

Wikipedia says xDrive uses an electronically controlled clutch pack to send torque to the front axle, and that the Magna Actimax is the transfer case in nearly all xDrive systems. On the 2018 X3 to X6 the default split is 40:60, front to rear.1
